- What you should know about retinol:
- Retinol is an extremely effective and powerful anti-aging ingredient. You may experience mild redness, a warm, tingling sensation, or flaking (skin exfoliation). These conditions are normal, temporary indications that the formula is working.
- If you experience increased discomfort when using this product, revert to once every other night until skin adjusts. This adjustment can take up to 4 weeks.
- First time users and those with drier skin types may want to use this product every other night for more than 2 weeks to give skin additional time to adjust.
- For added comfort, use a mild cleanser and layer an additional moisturizer over this product.
- Limit sun exposure in general. Be sure to apply a sunscreen of SPF15 or higher during the day while using this product, and one week after stopping use of it. Note that extreme weather conditions such as wind or cold may be more irritating, so take the proper precautions to protect your face.

You recommend using clinique smart night moisturizer after using this product, however that is no longer available on your website. Will you be bringing this back? I was told to use this in place of the moisturizer at night. This is frustrating.

Clinique Smart Night Clinical MD Multi-Dimensional Repair Treatment Retinol Serum, as a serum, should be followed by your favorite Clinique moisturizer after. We like Clinique Smart Clinical Repair Wrinkle Correcting Cream (or Rich Cream for those that need deep hydration). This moisturizer may be used in place of the retired Clinique Smart Night Custom-Repair Moisturizer. When using the serum, for the first two weeks, only use it every other night, then nightly. The negative reviews of this product surprise me and that some are saying that the directions are not clear. Any time one uses a Retinol product, you HAVE to apply a moisturizer over it. I used this product as directed and had to discontinue it before I even made it out of the two week period where you only use it every other day. This is a fantastic product. After using it for more than a year, a very good friend told me that it looked like I had had work done! It made my skin look visibly younger. Please, please do not discontinue this. While it has been unavailable, I have been using all of the other anti-aging products that Clinique offers, and none of them compare to this product.

Clinique has a bad habit of making a good product then discontinuing it when they make another product to substitute for it in smaller quantities and higher prices. The formulation of this was great when it was first introduced. Not sure what changed. I used to see the dark spots just falling off, but that hasn't been the case as of late. It still makes my skin dewy and soft, but something happened and my skin shows it. Now, there's a serum. Much smaller. Much more expensive. Not as forgiving of a formula. I keep trying to give this company a chance, but the whole point is a skin care routine is CONSISTENCY. I'll find a more reliable brand. I just can't do another purge stage while my skin gets used to another product that'll just get discontinued in a year or so.

This stuff is a miracle. My skin hasn't looked this great in 20 years! I'm a man with dry, very sensitive skin and about to turn 50. I tried prescription strength retinol creams - which worked but were expensive, difficult to get, and caused irritation if used too much. This...WOW. Same results, if not a little better than the prescriptions. People have commented and I see a difference with regular use. It's part of an overall routine - but an important piece to the puzzle. When I wake up - my face looks amazing. I see less wrinkles and fine lines, my complexion is smoother, and face is more radiant. It is worth the high price and I always have a 2nd tube ready to go since it sometimes goes out of stock. It's not greasy, and it absorbs very well. I use the dark spot serum with this at night, and then use the rapid turnaround nightly moisturizer. My face looks amazing, feels great, and people in-person and on Zoom can see the difference.
