The bowl and brush make coloring a breeze. Color goes on more easily with the brush, and I feel the brush makes the color go on more evenly too.The clips are a definite must have so that you can divide the hair in four sections to do the roots. Buy clips and comb at local store. The applicator brush is handy and makes you feel like a pro using it, but it isn't worth $18. Not sure why there is a bowl since the color is mixed in the bottle.
